In its consistent effort to assist Ethiopia’s overall agricultural development, MASHAV (Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation) provided applied training for professionals from East African countries (SFE region) on Dairy Cattle Feeding and Husbandry Management.
Organized by the UN-FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) and EIAR (Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research), the training conducted for two weeks aimed to provide theoretical as well as practical know-how for about 20 experts from SFE countries including Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Djibouti, and South Sudan on dairy production and management practices along the dairy value chain focusing on feeding and husbandry management.
Consequently, the overall purpose of the training was to strengthen the capacity of the organizations involved in dairy research and development from the countries listed above in the improvement of livestock, dairy, and meat value chains.
Given by Israeli agriculture experts Ilan Waksman and Uzi Moallem, the training took place at the EIAR headquarters and the Holeta Research Center. The lectures were delivered at the EIAR headquarters training hall and partly at Holeta Research Center Training Hall; and practical sessions carried out at Holeta Research Center dairy research farm and laboratories.
In addition, there were visits to different organizations and sites where trainees collected some practical experience in dairy production. These include where dairy breeding is practiced, artificial insemination centers, Adaberga Dairy Research Center, private peri-urban dairy farms and feed processing units, as well as traditional livestock production systems.
