#NO2Antisemitism

On September 25, 2018, the Permanent Mission of Israel to the UN opened a unique pavilion as part of a campaign in order to raise awareness about the scourge of anti-Semitism worldwide.

Surveys conducted during 2013 and 2014 by respected international NGO'S and intergovernmental bodies such as the EU Fundamental Rights Agency demonstrate that Jewish communities in many places are under threat. Indeed even their basic freedoms of assembly, free speech and free expression are challenged and not guaranteed, as Jewish communities in many places can no longer identify in public as being Jewish, without fearing verbal or even bodily harm.

Antisemitism frequently charges Jews with conspiring to harm humanity, and it is often used to blame Jews for “why things go wrong.” It is expressed in speech, writing, visual forms and action, and employs sinister stereotypes and negative character traits. Contemporary examples of Antisemitism in public life include also the inappropriate distortion of Holocaust remembrance in a malevolent way designed to harm Jews, and often constitutes a form of Holocaust denial. Recently, there has been a steep rise in physical attacks on Jews and the institutions of Jewish life, in Europe and elsewhere.

Antisemitism, like other forms of racism, is a threat to all who desire a decent society for all. History has thought us that for evil to prevail over good; it is enough that decent people stay silent. It is appropriate at this time that the United Nations, who's Charter sends a clear and unambiguous call for equality to all, send a clear call of alarm against the the recent rise in Antisemitism and calls upon its Member States to take concrete  steps against this societal disease.

This can be done through a triple mechanism: Education, legislation and enforcement of anti-hate speech laws. Also, it is of great importance for sates to collaborate with civil society through effective partnerships and strengthened dialogue and co-operation on combating Antisemitism.

The role of United Nations is pivotal in the combat against this ancient malady by working with governments to promote tolerance and mutual respect in the educational system. It is without a doubt the right time for the UN to draft a General Assembly resolution condemning Antisemitism and its manifestations around the world.

At the pavilion, countries’ leaders and ambassadors were photographed with the #No2Antisematism campaign slogan. They then published the images on social networks, leading to the campaign receiving a broad, international distribution in order to spread the message and stop the rise of Antisemitism in the world.
