One of the world’s greatest conductors, Zubin Mehta,
conducted the highly acclaimed Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) this month
at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. This prestigious event is Israel’s
tribute to Singapore and an early birthday gift to Singapore, in line with the
SG50 celebrations marking the nation's golden jubilee next year.
For over 70 years, the IPO has been an arts beacon and
symbol for cultural diplomacy, bringing its music and message of peace to
concerts in some of the biggest cities in the world.
Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore Teo Chee Hean and
Israeli ambassador Yael Rubinstein were among those who attended the fully sold
out one-night-only concert. The Israel Philharmonic, under the baton of Maestro
Mehta, performed three works: Vivaldi’s Concerto in B minor for Four Violins,
Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 (Linz) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
Ahead of the concert, about 500 specially invited
guests, including members from the pioneer generation and students, attended
the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra's rehearsal.
During the actual concert performance, the audience
stood to attention for the opening works conducted by Mehta. Zubir Said's
Majulah Singapura (Singapores National Anthem) was followed by Hatikvah, Israel's
national anthem. Both were greeted with a resounding and heartfelt applause.
After the sold out concert of over 1600 guests,
members of the orchestra were invited to an exclusive, private after-show
cocktail at the ArtScience Museum, which was also attended by Maestro Mehta, Mr
Teo and Ambassador Rubinstein.
