The Embassy of Israel prides itself in commemorating International Women's Day (IWD) every year showcasing different themes, all with the universal goal of inspiring women, celebrating achievements and addressing pertinent issues relating to women in modern times. This year, for IWD 2014, we were proud to collaborate with the renowned NUS Arts Festival for a documentary screening of Super Women, an award-winning film on Thursday, 20th March 2014 that documents the lives of five cashiers from Russian backgrounds who work at a branch of a mega supermarket chain in north Tel Aviv. Filmed over two and a half years, it takes viewers inside the world of the supermarket, where the colleagues support each other through the struggle of daily life.
As part of the event, we held a panel discussion on addressing Poverty/ Migration with expert guests Assoc Prof John Donaldson, Principal Investigator, Unmet Social Needs from LIEN Centre School for Social Innovation, SMU/ Dr Theresa W. Devasahayam, President-Elect, Soroptimist International of Singapore and Former Gender Studies Programme Coordinator, ISEAS/ Ms. Winifred Loh, President, AWARE Singapore.
