De La Salle University, in partnership with the Vienna-based International Peace Foundation, hosted a lecture by Nobel Laureate for Chemistry Prof. Ada Yonath “From Basic Science to Advanced Medicine – Molecules of Life and their Impact in Modern Biomedical Research,” Mar. 2.

Prof. Yonath of the Weismann Institute of Science in Israel received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her groundbreaking work on the structure of ribosomes, the cells’ “protein factory.”

She generated 3D models that show different antibiotics bind to the ribosome and how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. These models have revolutionized the field of structural biology and are now utilized by scientists in order to develop new antiobiotics, directly assisting the saving of lives.

Prof. Yonath is the first Middle Eastern woman to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences, and the first woman in 45 years to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
