Ambassador of Israel Effie Ben Matityau presented Wilfredo Tiu with MASHAV’s development grant of PhP 497,850 for the upgrading of Sogbohan Agri-Training Institute (SATI) in Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte.
The development grant is a special project of MASHAV, Israel’s agency for international development cooperation, with the main objective to help MASHAV course graduates to further develop their existing ideas to a level of sustainability and maturity on an economic basis.
Wilfredo Tiu is a graduate of MASHAV course on intensive vegetable production which took place in Israel in 2011. Upon his return, he envisioned this special project catering to the farmers and fishermen in its location in Sogbohan Islet, Barangay Bagumbayan in Dinagat Islands and other nearby barangays.
Following the earthquake in the province, food security and capacity-building became even more important.
The MASHAV development grant will be used mostly to construct a greenhouse at SATI, the only agriculture training center in the islands. It will also be used to upgrade SATI’s facilities and training capacity.
SATI is envisioned to be the training and production center of high-value vegetables and other agricultural products, as well as fresh water fish such as tilapia.
