55th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION NOSTRA AETATE

55th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION NOSTRA AETATE

Today we mark the 55th anniversary of the Nostra Aetate Declaration, adopted by the Second Vatican Council, published on October 28, 1965.

This important document paved the way to a profound change in the Church’s attitude towards Judaism and made the Church rediscover her Jewish roots.

This theological turning point made possible the political change that led to the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and the Holy See in 1994.

During these 55 years we have come a long way: Jewish and Catholic delegations meet regularly, and new documents on Catholic-Jewish relations have been published.

Unfortunately, we live in an age in which the scourge of anti-Semitism has not been eradicated and is even on the rise. Therefore, it is ever more important and necessary to spread the message of Nostra Aetate and subsequent documents.
