Dear reader,
As we prepare for the High Holidays and the communal and personal introspection which mark this period of the Jewish calendar, it is my honor to share with you the reader, "
In the Gates of Jerusalem", a collection of writings and poems on the diverse meanings of a united Jerusalem and their implications for contemporary Jewish life and modern Israel.
This unique reader was prepared by the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with the Shalom Hartman Institute, and includes selections from Abraham Joshua Heschel, Rabbi Tamar Appelbaum, Yehudah Amichai, the Druze poet Naim Araidi, Bambi Sheleg and others, and opening remarks by President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The reader can be viewed online or printed at home from the dedicated web page https://hartman.org.il/gates and is both computer and mobile phone adapted. Published versions of the reader are available from our mission, though in limited numbers.
I hope you enjoy this reader, and will consider sharing it with your (name of temple/synagogue/ organization) members.
Shanah Tovah,
Aviv Shir-On, Ambassador of the state of Israel
