Memorial Ceremony Brings Community Together

    The Israeli House at The Consulate General of Israel to the Southeast marked Israel's Memorial Day with a widely attended ceremony at Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Atlanta. This year, the entire Atlanta Jewish community came together to pay respect to Israel's fallen soldiers and victims of terror.  Jewish day schools Weber, Davis, Epstein and Yeshiva Atlanta all participated in the Sunday evening service.   
     
    Bereaved sisters of fallen IDF soldiers Tom Karin and Ori Azulay flew from Israel to speak about their loved ones.  A handful of Israeli Air force personnel working at Lockheed Martin also took part in the ceremony. The Consulate's official Yom Hazikaron service ended with a procession of flags by Israeli scout troops Tzofim and Bnei Akiva.
     
    Israel's ​Remembrance Day, Yom Hazikaron, is a day of collective and personal anguish mingled with awe and honor for the fallen. In Israel, the official events began at 8:00 PM on April 14th with a moment of national silence heralded by a one minute siren. ​Israel's flag, adorned with a black ribbon and memorial flame, is placed on each and every grave of those who fell in Israel's battles and are buried in military cemeteries throughout Israel. It expresses the country's respect for the 25,578 Fallen Israeli Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism as well as the entire country's participation in the grief of the families.
