Sunday's remarks were openend by Rabbi Peter Berg of The Temple. Rabbi Berg spoke about the great relationship between his community and Israel before introducing Consul General Opher Aviran.
"Israel has experienced 65 years of great achievements, joy and gratification. In 1948 we began as a nation of only 800,000 people. Today, Israel has 8 million citizens," said Consul General Opher Aviran.
Consul General Aviran touted Israel's great achievements in technology and credited Israel's strong relationship with the United States.
Consul General Aviran presented Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens with a special plaque on behalf of the people and the State of Israel in honor of Attorney General Olens' dedication to the betterment of the U.S.-Israel relationship.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed served as the keynote speaker of the festive evening.
"Today, the city of Atlanta joins the people of Israel in celebrating 65 years of the state’s independence," said Mayor Reed.
Mayor Reed spoke proudly of the relationship between Atlanta and Israel from Israeli companies setting up headquarters in the southern capital to the city championing Iran divestment legislation.
"Israel’s founding stands as one of the most significant accomplishments of the 20th century - - significant in the profound statement it makes about the power of the human spirit, and of all that it is capable of achieving when faced with seemingly overwhelming adversity.," said Reed.
