GA Law Enforcement Learn from Israel

Israeli Experts Train GA Law Enforcement

  •
The Consulate General of Israel partnered with Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange (GILEE) at Georgia State University's Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and the Georgia Department of Public Safety  to provide training in Counter Terrorism for Atlanta Metro Area Law Enforcement Agencies.

The special briefing and training on terrorism featured a lecture given by GILEE founder Dr. Robbie Friedmann.   The briefing focused on understanding terrorism, methods and strategies of terrorism and means to counter. The local law enforcement participants were provided details on the complexity of terrorism and the political interests and gains that are inherent within terrorist acts.

“The workshop went very well,” said Professor Robbie Friedmann.  "All the individuals involved received a better view of the threat of terrorism while gaining practical knowledge in handling situational interaction with perpetrators."

During the second half of the workshop, the Consulate’s security team introduced hands-on training of Israeli martial arts Krav Maga (self defense contact combat).  One of Israel's top Krav Maga fighters conducted the training. The goal was to impart the unique skills and experiences the Israeli security forces acquired from facing the threat of terrorism on a daily basis. This practical knowledge is expected to help local law enforcement with their daily duty on street patrol, community security, school safety and much more.

At the end of the workshop Col. Mark McDonough, The Commissioner of  the Department of Public Safety spoke about the special bonds between the US and Israel, two true democracies which share the same values and experience similar challenges.

Consul General of Israel, Opher Aviran, spoke about how such essential international collaboration underlines the relationship between Israel and the United States, particularly the Southeast region.  “While security is not the sole binding factor in our two nations’ relationship, it is a significant aspect of that bond,” said Consul General Aviran.
