As a Jew living in Ethiopia, Ms. Elisheva Darar always dreamt of living in Israel.  At the age of six, Elisheva endured the ardous trek through Ethiopia to Sudan in order to realize her dream. Thousands of Ethiopians perished on this same journey throughout the years. Elisheva was a lucky one. She made it to Jerusalem.

Ms. Darar related her inspiring tail of immigration to Israel during her visit to Atlanta this week at a Global Lunch Forum co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel in cooperation with the Georgia Council for International Visitors. As a participant in the U.S. State Department's International visitor Leadership program (IVLP), it is Ms. Darar's goal to discuss how her exchange experience impacted her advocacy and educational work in Israel.

Ms. Darar told her audience at the Bremen Museum that immigration was not easy and spoke candidly about the trials and tribulations she endured as a new immigrant to Israel. She now uses these experiences to work with the Israeli government to improve conditions for Ethopian immigrants.

Ms. Darar was formerly responsible for the establishment and work of a think-tank that brought together leaders from both NGOs and the Israeli government to address the issues affecting 110,000 young Ethiopian immigrants in Israel. She is also an active Board Member for the Israeli Association for Ethiopian Jews.

"I am thankful for the state of Israel," proclaims Darar. Within Israel, Ms. Darar has been able to reach her highest potential and is making the state of Israel a better place.
