On January 24, 2023, the Embassy of the State of Israel, in cooperation with the City of Osijek and the Jewish Community of Osijek, held a ceremony awarding the title of the Righteous Among the Nations to the late Kamilo Firinger from Osijek.

Kamilo Firinger was a lawyer from Osijek, and in 1944 he saved the members of the Jewish Fischer family from Osijek – the mother Margita and two children, Darko and Lelja, by smuggling them across the border into Hungary using the documents of his own children.

Before the Holocaust, the Jewish community in Osijek had over 3,000 members. After the Holocaust, only 300 of them returned.

At the ceremony, Firinger's daughter, Mrs. Vera Pilepić, was awarded the medal and the certificate recognizing him as the Righteous Among the Nations. The uniqueness of this ceremony lies in the fact that, in addition to the living heiress of the Righteous, the rescued Darko Fischer, as well as a representative of Yad Vashem, attended. The audience of the Osijek Cultural Center, filled with teachers, professors, and students, as well as high-ranking guests, was addressed by the Ambassador of the State of Israel Gary Koren, the Mayor of the City of Osijek Ivan Radić, the Prefect of the Osijek-Baranja County Ivan Anušić, the President of the Jewish Community of Osijek Damir Lajoš and a representative of Yad Vashem Lea Micha Garyfalli.
