UN diplomatic effort against Hezbollah continues

In recent months, Israel's Mission to the United Nations has been leading a campaign for the Security Council to recognize Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. The Mission's efforts led to, among other things, the Council's December meeting to discuss the exposure of Hezbollah's terrorist tunnels in the north in light of Israel's Operation Northern Shield. During the meeting, Israel presented intelligence that showed the extent of Hezbollah's terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon. More recently, a delegation of dozens of UN ambassadors from around the world visited Israel last week and visited the northern border, including the area where the tunnels were discovered. After the visit, some of the ambassadors conveyed messages of support to Israel in its UN campaign against Hezbollah's terrorist activities.

As part of this diplomatic effort, senior IDF intelligence officers will arrive at the UN in the coming days to brief members of the Security Council on the background of Hezbollah joining the new government in Lebanon, Operation Northern Shield and Iran's efforts to increase its involvement in the region, among other subjects. Israel will express its concern to the Council members on the implications of Hezbollah strengthening its position in Lebanon and the need to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent presence in Syria.

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said that "the struggle against Hezbollah is also an ongoing diplomatic struggle. Israel is working with a combination of forces so that the countries of the world will also be exposed to the truth and will act against the Hezbollah terror organization that is controlled by Iran and destabilizes the region. Designating Hezbollah as a terrorist organization is a necessary step in attacking Tehran's global terror network."
