Israeli delegate Mr. Yotam Goren
featured in TheMarker’s “40 under 40” list
Shortly after completing his
course in the “Foreign Ministry's Tzoarim”, Yotam Goren found himself on the
frontline of Israeli foreign policy at the UN. His work is not limited to only defending
the Israeli position on issues familiar to us, but he also works in promoting
economic and cultural marketing tools: The “Israeli mind” and entrepreneurial
spirit.
Goren is the Israeli representative of the UN
fifth Committee, which deals with the management and distribution of the
organization's budget, including funding peacekeeping forces. Goren was
Recently appointed as head of a Committee of Conferences – which is the
committee that oversees the UN Department biggest logistics center, which deals
for example with placing 600 translators who work at the United Nations and
also deals with the supervision of the United Nation’s ongoing operations. In
other words, Goren is responsible for
the agenda of the United Nations and logistically, he is responsible for the
agenda of the General Assembly. It is a position of control that Israel has
never been in before.
Goren was born in Israel, but as
a child he moved with his parents to the United States, where he spend his adolescent
age and acquired an academic education. He then returned to Israel to serve in
the army, and after his release started training in a course led by the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs.
Early on in his career, the
Foreign Ministry sent Goren to represent Israel at the UN headquarters in New
York. Even among his fellow UN Fifth Committee Goren is considered quite young,
but he does not get excited about it, and excels at learning something new
every day. Goren’s power is particularly evident in the UN's budget committee,
which manages the funds that derive from 193 member States. All the states are
part of the 5th committee and its job is to fund the decisions made
by the UN, usually by means of alliances between the different countries.
Part of the Goren’s
responsibility is the management of Israeli policy on the budget of billions of
dollars each year are that Israel sends to the UN and the Peace Corps, but also
to promote the Israeli presence at the UN - a market of $ 15 billion.
