Ottawa, Canada – April 17, 2013: On the evening of April 15, the Embassy of Israel hosted a grand celebration marking 65 years of Israel’s independence. Set in the historic landmark of the Chateau Laurier, the reception was a worthy celebration of the special friendship between Israel and Canada—a friendship which was reaffirmed just last week in a joint declaration released following a meeting in Jerusalem between Minister Baird and Prime Minister Netanyahu (click here for the joint statement)

As a reflection of these close ties, there were over 600 guests representing Canada’s political, cultural, and economic leadership. Among other friends of Israel, the guests included Cabinet Ministers, Supreme Court Justices, a former Deputy Prime Minister, Senators, Members of Parliament, the Chief of Defence Staff, a former Chief of Defence Staff, ambassadors, professors, rabbis, journalists and representatives of Ottawa’s vibrant Jewish community.

The evening included remarks delivered by Her Excellency  Miriam Ziv, Ambassador of Israel to Canada, and The Honourable John Baird, Canada’s Foreign Minister. These remarks highlighted the increased cooperation between the two countries and the recent announcement of a plan to establish a Strategic Partnership Agreement, which will provide both countries with concrete benchmarks to further deepen the bilateral relationship.
