On Monday Jan.29 we commemorated the people who lost their lives in the most
horrific event in the human history. It is difficult to imagine how the Jewish
people suffered during the Holocaust. It is remarkable that European Jews not
just rebuilt their lives but became among the most successful communities in
the world, “said Shri Ramesh Bais, Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra. He was
addressing the commemorative event organized by the Consulate General of Israel
and the Kenesseth Synagogue to mark the International Holocaust Day. The
programme was attended by Israel’s Consul General to Mid-west India, Mr. Kobbi
Shoshani, leading entrepreneur and philanthropist Sangita Jindal, members of
the Consular Corps, educators and members of the local Jewish communities.
United Nations General Assembly observes 27th January, as
the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. In 1945, on
this day, the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau
was liberated by the Soviet troops. Six million Jews; including one million
children were murdered during the Holocaust. People around the world reaffirm
the unwavering commitment to counter antisemitism, racism, and other forms of
intolerance that may lead to group-targeted violence.
Addressing the event, Consul General Kobbi Shoshani
said,” We have to ensure that the Holocaust should never happen again. Israel
recognizes the fact that Jewish people are living in India for more than two
thousand years without any fear of persecution.” Chairman and Managing Trustee
of Jacob Sassoon’s Trust, Mr. Solomon Sofer, Consul General of the United
States of America, Mr. Mike Hankey and Consul General of Germany, Mr. Achim
Fabig addressed the gathering. A musical piece was performed by Yadnesh Raikar
and Rewa Khare.
