Tomato Birthday

TOMATOES Birthday Party

  •   Celebrating the birthday of Nepali-Israeli Tomatoes
  •

Sounds foolish?! But yes, the Embassy of Israel in Kathmandu along with MAHA Agriculture Private Limited is celebrating the birthday of Nepali-Israeli Tomatoes.  A year ago, the seeds of tomato along with cucumber and pepper were planted at a farm by a group of like minded farmers who returned back from Israel with the Israeli farming knowledge.  And now the result is in front of all of us.

To encourage this group of farmers, social activists and renowned actors, Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha Acharya joined hands to materialize the dream of those people.  The farm, called ‘MAHA Farm’, has become an example of what can be done to produce good quality and huge amount of tomatoes in Kathmandu just by using the right technique and the technology.  This is the first farm in Nepal which uses the Israeli technology – drip irrigation system, and for the purpose, the drip irrigation system was brought from India (developed in Israel and manufactured by Jain irrigation, India.

A reception was organized to honour the hard work of the farmers and to mark the success of the MAHA farm at the residence of the Israeli Ambassador H.E. Mr. Hanan Goder, in Kathmandu on 23 March 2012.  Speaking during the reception, Ambassador Goder said, “we are all grateful for these farmers!  These hardworking entrepreneurs show an excellent example how to learn, to implement, and to carry this model project”.

The Honourable State Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr. Om Prakash Yadav attended the celebration to encourage such initiative.  People from various walks of life including diplomats, government employees and farmers attended the celebration.

This project has proved that simple control of water and fertigation can triple the production.
