Consul General Amir Lati spoke to HKTDC Research in an
interview about Israel’s post‑pandemic economic outlook, the
prospects of its innovation and technology industry, and the business
opportunities arising from the growing trade and investment between Israel and
Hong Kong, and between Israel and mainland China.
Following a steady 3.3% per annum growth from 2015 to 2019,
Israel’s economy contracted by 2.2% in 2020 under the impact of Covid-19. On
the back of one of the world’s fastest vaccination campaigns, the year 2021
marked a strong rebound for Israel’s economy as its real GDP rose by 8.2%. With
the country reopening its borders in 2022, and economic activity gradually
returning to normal, the service and high‑tech sectors are expected to be
the key drivers of Israel’s post‑Covid economic development.
Nicknamed the “Start‑Up Nation”,
Israel has more than 7,000 active start‑up companies as of 28 October
2022. As a result of a vibrant technology ecosystem, supported by
government incentives and strong private sector investment, Israel has become
one of the world’s fastest‑growing innovation hubs for high‑tech
sectors, including cybersecurity, fintech, health‑tech, agrifood‑tech
and many more.
