    The Consulate General of Israel in Hong Kong celebrated the Jewish New Year with 300 guests and friends at the Israeli Gourmet Festival at the JW Marriott Hotel on 22 September 2009.

    The event was organized by the Consulate General of Israel in collaboration with the Israeli Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the Chabad of Hong Kong, aiming to introduce Israeli food and culture to the Chinese and international communities, and for the benefit of the Jewish and Israeli community in Hong Kong.

     
    “The event is a unique example of an innovative and close co-operation between this Consulate, the Israeli Chamber of Commerce and the Chabad in Hong Kong,” said Consul General of Israel Amikam Levy in his opening remarks. 

     

    Following the singing by Carmel Elsa High School Choir of Hong Kong, the opening ceremony was officiated by Consul General Amikam Levy, Guest of Honour Mr. So Kam-shing, Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Mr. Rafael Aharoni, Chairman of the Israeli Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, and Rabbi Mordechai Avtzon, Chabad of Hong Kong.  

     

    Among the special guests were: Mr. Nechemia (Chemi) Peres, son of Israeli President Shimon Peres and Chairman of Ptango Venture Capital, Consul General of India Lal Duhthlana Ralte, Consul General of Denmark Jorgen Mollegaard, Mr. Edward Yau Tang-wah, Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Tang King-shing, Commissioner of the Hong Kong Police Force, Dr. Jonathan Choi, Chairman of Sun Wah Group, Dr. Ambrose So, Honorary Consul of Portugal, and Dr. Hari Harilela, Chairman of Harilela Group. 



    Chef Eran Zino from Israel brought in many contemporary Israeli dishes, mixed with the Mediterranean ingredients and Moroccan cooking style.
     
    Dishes such as yellow tail tabouleh, chopped liver with Jerusalem salad, ox tail tortellini with apple salad, and grouper with hot tahini and falafel, were served at the festival that ran from 22-26 September at the JW’s California of the JW Marriott Hotel in Hong Kong.
