March 8th is International Women's Day, celebrated by the
United Nations and many countries around the world, including Israel.
International Women's Day commemorates the struggle for equal rights for women
and the struggle of women for justice, peace and progress. This day is
dedicated to examining the integration of women in economics, politics and
society, and honors their achievements in these fields. Since the beginning of
the struggle for equal rights for women, there has been significant progress in
making the legal status of women equal to that of men.
Women in Israel

In 2020, the first woman
was appointed as commander of an artillery unit.

In the current Knesset
(Israeli parliament), there are 30 women out of 120 (25%).

Golda Meir was the first
female Israeli Prime Minister. Today, Israeli has a female chief justice of the
Supreme Court, Esther Haiut.
·Einat Kalisch-Rotem is the
first woman to serve as the mayor of Haifa one of the 3 biggest cities in
Israel (Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa).

The percentage of working
women in Israel is one of the highest in OCED countries.
·
Women make up 3 of the 5
CEOs of the largest banks in Israel.
·
More women get academic
degrees in Israel than men. In 2017, 58% of bachelor’s degrees, 63% of master’s
degrees, and 53% of PhDs were awarded to women.
