The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a message of condolence to the family of the Baron William David Trimble, former First Minister of Northern Ireland and a steadfast friend of the State of Israel.
"We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Lord David Trimble, the former First Minister of Northern Ireland.
Lord Trimble was a courageous politician, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and a true friend of Israel.
Our condolences to Lady Trimble and their family."
A member of the Ulster Unionist Party, ahe was instrumental in the Irish peace process and the 1998 Belfast Agreement. But, as an officer of Conservative Friends of Israel, he frequently accompanies Tory MPs on their visits to israel.He fought to get Hizballah recognized as a terrorist organizaiotn in Europe, and in 2010, alongside Václav Havel, John Howard, Stephen Harper and José Maria Aznar, founded the Friends of Israel Initiative, which battles international delegitimisation of the Jewish state.
