Edited by Dr. Michael O'Sullivan & Dr. Rory Miller Published in May 2010, this book has a chapter on Ireland, Israel and the challenges of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, by Yanky Fachler.
He explores what these two economies can learn from each other in terms of entrepreneurial and innovative development. He concludes that while Ireland once was a role model for Israel, witness the stream of Israeli delegations that visited Dublin to emulate the social partnership model, today Ireland could take a leaf out of Israel’s policy of encouraging domestic R&D. Ireland’s priority was job creation, and this was at the expense of real investment in home-grown entrepreneurial enterprises. Israel has succeeded in punching beyond its weight because it has always set its sights on creating multinational companies.
Another area where Ireland can learn from Israel is in its maverick can-do attitude. The Israeli business culture encourages individual imagination, and appreciates the contribution of the non-conformist. This is encapsulated in the term ‘chutzpah’, (the title of another book by Fachler.)
