This year we celebrated Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights a bit in an advance, as the first candle of hanukika will be lit only on the 22nd of December.
Hanukkah is Jewish holiday commemorating the re-consecration of the Jerusalem Temple by the Maccabees after it was desecrated by Antioch IV. Epiphan.
When the Maccabees liberated the Jerusalem temple and lit up the eternal light, they found out the oil will last only for one day and it would take at least 8 days to prepare a new one. Tradition says a miracle happened as a small amount of oil lasted for eight days after all. Therefore, Jewish families light a candle for 8 days.
In cooperation with Federation of Jewish Communities, Jewish Community in Bratislava and Hotel Devin we organised a celebration for our honored guests and friends of the Embassy. We spent a pleasant evening together and listening to Pressburger Kletzmer band enjoyed some of the traditional Hanukkah dishes such as humus, sufganiot and burekas.
The event was officially opened by the Deputy Prime Minister for Investment and Informatization Mr. Richard Raši, Ambassador of the State of Israel H.E. Boaz Modai and Mr. Richard Duda, Chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities.
Thank you all for a great evening and please find a selection of photos by Oles Cheresko attached (more pics on our FB page Izrael na Slovensku).
