In cooperation with the Federation of Jewish Religious Communities in Slovakia and the Hotel Devín we organised a Hanukkah 2017 celebration.
In the tones of great music of Kashaver Klezmer Band, we celebrated the holiday of light in the company of government officials, members of the diplomatic community, members of the Jewish community and our friends and colleagues.
The story of Hanukkah comes from ancient times, when the Maccabees fought against Greeks and managed to get back the Jerusalem temple and re-consecrate it to Judaism.
However, when they entered the temple, there was only 1 bottle of oil (to light the candles) left, which could last maximum for one day. The miracle of Hanukkah is that it had lasted for eight days.
Hanukkah is therefore a holiday of hope, joy, but especially the one showing how important is to fight for your faith.
Especially in these times, we should take an example from our predecessors, keep on fighting for Jewish religion and educate next generations about the importance of freedom of religion and respect to the others.
So that we could meet in great numbers also next year and lighten the candles on Hanukkia together.
