International Holocaust Remembrance Day

  •

In honor of the International Holocaust Memorial Day, which was established by the UN in 2005, the Polish, Germany and Israeli embassies in Beijing jointly held a Holocaust Memorial Event on January 27, 2021.

The event was opened with speeches by the Polish Ambassador H.E Wojciech Zajączkowski, the Israeli DCM, Yuval Waks and the German Ambassador H.E. Dr. Clemens von Goetze.

This year, the topic of the Holocaust  Memorial Event, is the story of Anne Frank, who is one of the most discussed young Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Anne Frank gained fame after her death at the age of 16 with the publication of The Diary of a Young Girl where she documented her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944 (when she was captured and later died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp) during the German occupation of the Netherlands.

During the event, an exhibition based on illustrations from the book, Graphic diary of Anne Frank was presented.

In this Holocaust Memorial Event, the three embassies made a joint effort to further the historical remembrance of the Holocaust and underline the importance of education, tolerance and human spirit.

The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 27 January 1945.
