Remembering Kristallnacht

Consul General Aviran joined Rabbi Brian Glusman from the Marcus Jewish Community Center and leaders of the Atlanta Jewish community in commemorating the night the paramilitary wing of the Nazi party coordinated a series of attacks on Jewish owned establishments and synagogues on November 9-10, 1938.

"The state of Israel did not exist in 1938. There was no Jewish state to protect or assist the Jewish people of Europe. Today, we live in a different world where America is the greatest power in the world and the greatest ally to Israel," said Consul General Aviran.

The Kristallnacht or Night of Broken Glass memorial ceremony took place on the evening of November 8th at the Besser Holocaust Memorial Garden, one of the premier Holocaust memorials in the Southeast, located at the Marcus Jewish Community Center. The ceremony included the lighting of six torches to represent the six million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust. "Tonight we burn with the committment of never letting it happen again," said Rabbi Glusman.
