Ambassador Daniel Biran is charged with overseeing administrative affairs for Israel's missions in North, Central and South America including the United Nations, but his greatest experiences come from the other hat he wears as leader of Israel's international emergency response teams.
Turkey, Greece and Haiti are just a few of the disaster zones Ambassador Biran reached in the past several years. He is one of the first men on the ground and is instrumental in making Israeli response teams operational as soon as possible. "In Haiti, for example, Israel was the very first country to erect a fully functioning field hospital," said Biran. Israel coordinated with the Americans to bring thousands of tons of aid and supplies into Port-au-Prince. "We asked the Americans for permission to land on their runway. They told us to come back in an hour. We returned in 10 minutes and said 'where do we stand?' Meanwhile, I gave our team permission to fly to Haiti without knowing if we would be able to land or not," Biran added.
Ambassador Biran shared his expertise and the story of Israel's record-time response to the Haiti earthquake with professionals at the Center for Diease Control and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. Biran had the opportunity to tour the "Situation Room" at both agencies as well.
Biran continued his trip at an intimate gathering of Georgia Commissioners and leaders in healthcare and security hosted by the Israeli Consulate.
"We were so glad to be able to bring Ambassador Biran to Atlanta," said Consul General Opher Aviran. "His experiences on the ground from helping victims of earthquakes to refugees of war in Kosovo really show people the true morals and values of Israelis. It is all part of Tikkun Olam - the commandment to help repair the world.
