President Reuven and First Lady Nechama Rivlin this morning (Monday, 28 November 2016) hosted an official welcoming ceremony for President of Guatemala H.E. Jimmy Morales and First Lady Patricia Marroquin de Morales, marking their official visit to the State of Israel. The President and First Lady received their guests on the red carpet before the national anthems were played, after which both Presidents reviewed an honor guard and delivered brief statements.

President Rivlin welcomed President Morales and said, “The State of Israel is grateful to your country, and will never forget Jorge Garcia Granados, your Ambassador to the UN and member of the UNSCOP who helped garner votes in support of the establishment of the Jewish state. I know that this true friendship and support for Israel is a legacy that you proudly continue today, and I greatly appreciate this.”

The President added that Israel was proud of the cooperation between the countries, which was seen in a wide range of issues including medicine and agriculture in which the two countries were embarking on new projects.

“I want to thank you, Mr. President, for your personal support and for the support of your country for Israel on the international stage,” said President Rivlin and stressed, “The friendship between Israel and Guatemala is based on shared values, and is testament to how much can be achieved when together we are focused on building a better tomorrow. Israel can help greatly in development and innovation in your region and around the world, and we are committed to doing so.”

President Morales of Guatemala thanked the President for his warm welcome and said, “We have come here to strengthen the warm bonds of friendship between Israel and Guatemala. Guatemala has a special relationship with Israel, and we know we can continue to work together: in partnership and hand in hand. During my visit we will conduct a number of meetings addressing the developing of ties between our countries, and deepening connections in the field of research, development, the sciences, and ties between our universities. During our visit we hope we will be able to enjoy Israel’s rich culture and history, and learn from you how to improve in the areas of agriculture, husbandry, and technology – areas in which Israel excels.”

He added, “The current situation demands dialogue and stronger ties between peoples, and I hope this visit will contribute to that. We thank you again for the warm welcome and want to reassure you and the Israeli people of the deep commitment of the Guatemalan people to the State of Israel.’

Later President and First Lady Rivlin will host a state dinner in honor of the visit of the President and First Lady of Guatemala.
