Regarding the briefing notes of
the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights from 27 August, 2013, we
find disturbing yet unfortunately not surprising, that even during these
critical days of dramatic events and large scale humanitarian crises developing
in different locations throughout the Middle East, the High Commissioner for
Human Rights finds the time to express her concerns about municipal procedures
concerning housing in Jerusalem; this is furthermore compounded by the fact
that the discussed municipal procedures were proven to have gone through all
legal channels, and received all legally required approvals.
We furthermore find it puzzling
that the High Commissioner is rushing to express concerns about specific
incidents, particularly since she admits in her own message that "we do
not yet have sufficient information to make an assessment of these specific
cases (…)".
Regrettably, this type of
behavior only serves to further emphasize the High Commissioner’s Office
apparent helplessness and irrelevance in dealing with the substantive and
relevant challenges originally mandated to deal with, including the ongoing
slaughter in Syria, as well as consistent and brutal violations of human rights
in Iran and elsewhere.
