ISRAEL URGES THE WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY TO CALL FOR THE HOSTAGES’ RELEASE AND TO CONDEMN HAMAS’S MILITARIZATION OF HOSPITALS IN GAZA

Today, the World Health Assembly will discuss a Palestinian-Syrian led draft decision supposedly addressing the health situation in Gaza, while ignoring the reality on the ground. Once again, the fate of the 125 hostages who have remained in the hands of the Hamas terrorist organization for the past 236 days is being silenced. The Palestinian delegation and its supporters continue to shield Hamas, condoning their actions.

We will not let this hypocrisy go unchallenged. Today, the Israeli delegation to the UN in Geneva will present a moral amendment that calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza and condemns the use of health facilities, including hospitals and ambulances, by armed groups.

Israeli Ambassador Meirav Eilon Shahar said that “a decision on health that does not demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages – who are held by a terrorist organization, raped and tortured – is an unforgivable moral failure”, adding that “a decision that does not also condemn the militarization of health facilities by terrorists in Gaza has no intention of improving the health conditions on the ground.”

For 8 months now, the hostages have been deprived of every one of their rights. For years, Hamas has systematically used health facilities as a cover for its terrorist operations.

These actions must be condemned. Failing to do so will only render the WHO a political tool for supporters of terrorism, rather than a professional body that aims to promote health.
