The appointment of the new Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur
on Israel is nothing but the continuation of decades of hypocrisy, bias and hatred
towards Israel. Rather than following its own rules calling for objectivity and
impartiality, the Human Rights Council has once again chosen a rapporteur
because of their bias and activism against Israel.
Discussing the launch of her book on Israel and the Palestinian
refugees, Francesca Albenese said: "Deep down, I feared that embarking on
research on a matter which I had deeply held personal views could compromise my
objectivity." The question must then be asked, how can her "deeply
held personal views" not blur her objectivity when performing her new
role?
Commenting on this appointment, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Meirav
Eilon Shahar said: “Israel does not expect any fair, objective, nor
professional treatment from an activist who promotes outrageous libels,
compares the Holocaust to the Nakba, and advocates for the de-facto destruction
of the Nation State of the Jewish People.”
The Special Rapporteur’s mandate was established with the sole
purpose of discriminating against Israel and Israelis. It is just a continuation
of the pattern of the HRC’s institutional discrimination. No situation has an
ongoing special rapporteur accountable to no-one, Israel does. No other Item
targets one country, Item 7 does. No country has at least four resolutions
against it every year, Israel does.
While Israel will continue to promote Human Rights and uphold its
obligations, both at national and international level, we have long understood
the HRC plays a detrimental role when it comes to Israel.
