Israeli Minister of Tourism Yariv Levin and Philippine Secretary of Labor and Employment Silvestre Bello are expected to sign a bilateral agreement today (Tuesday, 11 December), regulating the entry of Filipinos to work in the Israeli hotel industry. The Filipinos will help alleviate the severe shortage of workers in this industry.
In accordance with a government decision in August 2018, the agreement will enable employers to bring 1000 Filipinos to Israel to work in the hotel industry, with the possibility of doubling that number.
This agreement is a result of marathon negotiations conducted last month in Manilla by an interministerial delegation headed by Ms. Stella Rap, Deputy Director General for Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other members of the delegation included representatives of the Ministries of Tourism and Labor and of the Population & Immigration Authority. It is a continuation of the groundbreaking agreement signed a few months ago by the two states, which regulates the employment of tens of thousands of Filipinos working in Israel as caregivers, thereby benefiting the many Israelis in need of nursing care as well as guaranteeing the rights of the Filipino caregivers.
These agreements are a direct outcome of the visit of Philippine President Rodrigo Duerte to Israel in September 2018, which advanced bilateral relations in many important spheres, such as private sector exposure to activities in the field of energy and oil and gas exploration, defense exports, tourism, aviation, and more.
