Deputy Foreign Minister Zeev Elkin met with Pope Francis in the Holy See. In a special tribute to the Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister, the pope received Deputy FM Elkin in his private chambers rather than in the general audience hall as planned.
At their meeting, the two discussed issues relating to the ongoing negotiations between Israel and the Holy See, which are nearing completion after a lengthy period of talks. After a warm and interesting discussion, Dep. FM Elkin invited Pope Francis to visit Israel. Pope Francis responded favorably, and stated that it was his intention to make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
Pope Francis thanked the Israeli delegation for its important work and the progress on the issues under discussion, and requested that Dep. FM Elkin promote the signing of the agreement as soon as possible.
