Suicide bombing of No. 20 Egged bus in Kiryat Menahem, Jerusalem November 21, 2002
Eleven people were killed and some 50 wounded by a suicide bomber on a No. 20 Egged bus on Mexico Street in the Kiryat Menahem neighborhood of Jerusalem. The bus was filled with passengers, including schoolchildren, traveling toward the center of the city during rush hour. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.
Reactions of world leaders:
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan: (Nov 21, 2002) "The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest possible terms the Palestinian suicide bombing in Jerusalem today that killed at least 11 Israelis and injured dozens more, including many children. He expresses his profound condolences to the families of the victims. As he has made clear repeatedly, the Secretary-General believes that such attacks are utterly reprehensible and only serve to spur further hatred and mistrust."
US Secretary of State Colin Powell (Nov 21, 2002) "We condemn unequivocally the terrorist bombing today in Jerusalem that killed at least eleven and wounded dozens on a bus filled with children and students. There can be no excuse for this despicable attack, and we call on the Palestinians to take immediate and sustained steps to eradicate the infrastructure of terrorism and violence that has wrought such tragic bloodshed."
Presidency of the European Union: (Nov 21, 2002) "Todays atrocious terror action on a bus in the Jerusalem Kiryat Menachem neighbourhood must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It is yet another deliberate attempt to derail the process towards reconciliation."
