The following has been cleared for publication:

Following intelligence and operational activity, the Israel Security Agency (ISA), in cooperation with the Israel Police and the IDF, early this morning (Tuesday, 8 January 2019), arrested Asem Barghouti, the terrorist who perpetrated the 13 December 2018 shooting attack at Givat Asaf. He participated in the Ofra hitch-hiking stop shooting along with his brother Salah, who was killed during an attempt to arrest him on 11 December 2018. Three Israelis were murdered in these attacks and more were wounded.

Asem Barghouti was arrested at the home of one of his accomplices in the Binyamin area village of Abu Shukeidim and had currently been planning additional terrorist attacks. A Kalashnikov automatic rifle and considerable ammunition were seized during the arrest (see attached photo).

This morning's arrest, which was carried out by ISA and Israel Police units, was the product of an intelligence and operational effort that began immediately after the shooting. The ISA and IDF used various intelligence, operational and technological means to locate the accused including the arrests of dozens of militants and accomplices from among the Hamas infrastructures in the Binyamin area. Asem Barghouti is being questioned by the ISA.

The ISA, IDF and Israel Police will continue to take determined action against those who carry out terrorist attacks and their accomplices in order to maintain the security of Israel.
