On 26 October 1994 Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty. Thus, Jordan became the second Arab country, after Egypt, to make peace with Israel. The treaty normalized relations and resolved territorial disputes between the two states. It dealt with various issues like establishing diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, security and police cooperation, setting up joint border crossings, water resources, civil aviation, tourism, culture and science, and more. Israel also recognized a "special historical role" for Jordan in Jerusalem, mainly with regard to its Islamic holy sites and institutions.
