Since its creation, Israel's foreign policy has been based on the effort to advance peace in the Middle East while ensuring the country's security. At the same time, Israel has promoted cooperation with all nations world-wide.
Israel joined the United Nations on 11 May 1949 and by 2014 had established diplomatic relations with 159 out of the 193 member states of the UN as well as with two non-members: The Holy See (the Vatican) and the European Union.
Of the UN member states that do not have diplomatic relations with Israel, 19  are members of the Arab League and 11 are countries with a Muslim majority.
