His Excellency Mr. Amir Maimon is the recently
appointed Ambassador of the State of Israel to Australia, following an
extensive career in the Israel Defense Force and the Israel Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
After a 14-year military career in the
paratroopers unit of the IDF, (Ret) Lt. Colonel Maimon joined the Foreign
Service. He has held diplomatic posts in London, Canada, Turkey, Ethiopia, and
Washington.
Mr. Maimon served as the first
Ambassador of the State of Israel to Lithuania, along with other notable
appointments within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Israeli National
Defense College.
He served at the Israeli
Embassy in Ankara, Turkey in several capacities, including Charge
d'Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission.
A highlight of Mr. Maimon's career
was his role in coordinating "Operation Solomon" while
posted in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. This operation rescued 15,000 Ethiopian Jews
and airlifted them to Israel. For his integral participation in this
effort, Mr. Maimon received a prestigious award.
Mr. Maimon has also served in London
(1992-1995) and Canada (1999-2002).
Mr. Maimon holds a Bachelor’s degree in
General History from Tel Aviv University and a Master’s degree in Social Sciences
from Haifa University, and has studied National Security Issues through the
Israeli National Defense College.
