Updating marital status

    According to section 17 of the Population Registry Law 1965 - a resident of Israel must notify the registration official of a change in registration details, including a change in his marital situation, within 30 days.

    The Consulate offers the following services:

    ·       Updating marital status (marriage, divorce, widowed)

    ·       Request for choosing a new name (after updating marital status)

    ·       Request for a name change

    After submitting the request at the Consulate, the request will be processed by The Populations and immigration authority in Israel.

     

    Registering a Marriage

    An Israeli citizen that was married abroad needs to come to the Consulate in person and update their marital status. The service is free of charge.

    If both spouses are Israeli citizens – the presence of both is mandatory at the Consulate in order to update the status.

    If only one of the spouses is an Israeli citizen – Only the presence of the Israeli citizen is mandatory in order to update the status.

    Required documents for marital status update:

    ·        Form for updating marital status​

    ·         Marriage certificate in an international format authenticated with an apostille

    ·         Identification items for both spouses

    ·         If only one of the spouses is an Israeli citizen, the non-Israeli spouse must provide a document attesting their previous marital status:

    In one of these two ways:

    -       Marriage certificate from the original state of the partner that states the partners previous marital status with an apostille stamp. The certificate needs to be in English/Hebrew, with an apostille or in another language, with an apostille stamp and a translation of it to English/ Hebrew with apostille on the translation as well.

    -       A certificate from the original state of the partner that states is previous marital status before the marriage, with an apostille stamp. The certificate needs to be in English/Hebrew, with an apostille or in another language, with an apostille stamp and a translation of it to English/ Hebrew with apostille on the translation as well.

      

    ** A request for choosing a new name due to status change can be submitted at the appointment. This service is free.

     

    Registering a Divorce

    An Israeli citizen that was divorced abroad needs to come to the Consulate in person and update their marital status.

    If both ex-spouses are Israeli citizens – the presence of both is mandatory at the Consulate in order to update the status.

    If only one of the ex-spouses is an Israeli citizen – Only the presence of the Israeli citizen is mandatory in order to update the status.

    Documentation required:

    ·         Form for updating marital status

    ·         Divorce certificate in an international format authenticated with an apostille

    ·         Identification for both ex-spouses (If one of the ex-spouses is not an Israeli citizen, their passport is required).

    ** A request for choosing a new name due to status change can be submitted at the appointment. This service is free of charge.

     

    Registering the Death of an Israeli citizen:

    First degree relatives of the deceased (Spouses, children, and parents) wishing to register the passing of their relative, will need to come to the Consulate in order to update the populations and immigration authority.

    Documentation required:

    Fill out the Notification about Death of Israeli citizen form​ .

    The deceased’s Israeli means of identification (ID and passport)

    A death certificate in an international format authenticated with an apostille.

    This service is free of charge

    Registration of widowed:

    An Israeli citizen who was widowed will need to come to the Consulate and update their new status.

    A request for choosing a new name due to status change (Marriage/Divorce/Widowed)

    An Israeli citizen who has married, divorced or been widowed and would like to choose a new surname can come to the Consulate and update The Populations and immigration authority with their new status and at the same meeting request an new surname. This service is free of charge.

     

    Documentation required:

    ·        Name Selection form​ 

    ·       A marriage /divorce or death certificate in an international format authenticated with an apostille.

     

    Request for a name change

    An Israeli citizen that would like to change their name, surname or first name, will need to come to the Consulate and submit a request.

    Documentation required:

    ·         Israeli passport

    ·         Fill in the request for a name change​

     

    This service has a fee (see Consular Fee Chart​)

    After submitting the request, the Consulate will transfer it to The Populations and immigrations for processing.

    After the change is approved, it will be possible to update it accordingly in the passport.

    Please note that the previous name will appear in brackets next to the new name for 7 years.

    A name change is possible once in 7 years.
