Israel's Ambassador to the Holy See, Zion Evrony (PhD), was born in Iran in 1949 and emigrated to Israel at the age of one. He arrived at his new post in Rome on August 1st 2012 to replace outgoing Ambassador, Mordechay Lewy.
A veteran diplomat, Dr. Evrony has served as Ambassador to Ireland, Consul General in Houston and as Special Advisor for Academic Affairs to the Director General. He also served as Head of the International Department and the Iranian Desk at the Policy Research Center, Head of the Policy Planning Bureau, and as a Director of the Diplomatic Cadet Course.
In 2000, Dr. Evrony received the Foreign Service and Civil Service Awards for Excellence in recognition of his work as Consul General in Houston
He received his Ph.D. in International Relations from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1986, following an M.B.A. in Business Administration and a B.A. in Sociology and Political Science – both from the Hebrew University.
He is married to Rita – a social worker. They have three children.
